InnerSelf Newsletter: August 30, 2020

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.

The roads we are travelling these days are as old as the times, yet are new for us. The experiences we are having are as old as the times, yet they also are new for us. The same goes for the challenges we face. So this week we share various ways to traverse these times and come out on the other side of these challenges in a better world, as a better person.

We start with "Discovering Your Own Gateway To The Soul" from a new book by Serge beddington-Behrens. Maggie Craddock then helps us answer the question: "What Do I Do If I Sense Trouble? " and firefighter Hersch Wilson shares "How To Stay Calm In An Emergency or Under Stress: A Primer".  We follow that with my article, "When The Truth Is So Terrible It Hurts, Take Action".

And then there are physical and health challenges in our lives. Jane Duncan Rogers delves into a difficult topic : "Talking About a Subject Hardly Anyone Wants to Talk About: Death". Barb DePree MD reflects on another somewhat "taboo" subject: "Your Menopause, Your Future, Your Choices". We also take a look at "A Truly Alternative, Alternative Medicine: Ayurveda".

We complete the featured articles this week with a short article I wrote based upon a song I came across: "When Your Back Is Against The Wall". It felt like a song we might all relate to at this time.

Please scroll down for the featured articles in this new issue of InnerSelf, and also the recap of all the articles that were added to the website during the week.

Wishing you enjoyable insightful reading, and of course a wonder-full, joy-full, health-full, and loving week.

Discovering Your Own Gateway To The Soul

Written by Serge Beddington-Behrens

Discovering Your Own Gateway To The Soul
I was extremely fortunate in that very soon after leaving university, a gateway came stalking me. (Yes, we need to know that what we are looking for is also seeking us out.)  It took the form of my bumping into a friend who happened to tell me about a mysterious spiritual community in Scotland...

What Do I Do If I Sense Trouble?

Written by Maggie Craddock

What Do I Do If I Sense Trouble?
One reason the story of the Titanic disaster has such enduring appeal is that it is an object lesson in the need to question perceived reality, trust our gut, and when necessary, act on our own personal authority to save others and ourselves.

How To Stay Calm In An Emergency or Under Stress: A Primer

Written by Hersch Wilson

How To Stay Calm In An Emergency or Under Stress: A Primer
The singular and most important idea that will help us stay calm in an emergency — or at any other time — is that we have a choice. It often doesn’t feel like we have a choice. Something happens, we get rear-ended on the highway, and we are quick to anger.

When The Truth Is So Terrible It Hurts, Take Action

Written by Marie T. Russell, InnerSelf.com

When The Truth Is So Terrible It Hurts, Take Action
Amidst all the horrors taking place these days, I am inspired by the rays of hope that shine through. Ordinary people standing up for what is right (and against what is wrong). Baseball players, white and black, both teams, walking off the field in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. And today, I came across the video of the Seattle Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll...

Talking About a Subject Hardly Anyone Wants to Talk About: Death

Written by Jane Duncan Rogers

Talking About a Subject Hardly Anyone Wants to Talk About: Death
In the Western world, we are not very good at talking about death. It’s almost as if it has become a taboo subject. One of the ways we demonstrate our uncomfortableness on this subject is to use euphemisms for death.

Your Menopause, Your Future, Your Choices

Written by Barb DePree, MD

Your Menopause, Your Future, Your Choices
As women at midlife, we understand our priorities. We’ve demonstrated how good we are at problem-solving, over and over again. Many of us find midlife to be a time of reinvention, starting new careers or businesses, or diving into new volunteer endeavors.

A Truly Alternative, Alternative Medicine: Ayurveda

Written by Marianne Teitelbaum, D.C.

A Truly Alternative, Alternative Medicine: Ayurveda
America is reeling from an epidemic of ill health that drives people to despair and to doctors. The litany is familiar: cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and digestive disturbances, with the latter two often one and the same.
