InnerSelf Newsletter: October 1st, 2017

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.

Perhaps the theme of this week's newsletter is best resumed in the title of this article: "From Chaos to Order: Planning a New Life with New Habits". While that particular article deals with addiction, we start with Joyce Vissell sharing personal experiences and perspectives on the chaos of natural disasters that were transformed to order with "The Power of Showing Up and Helping". We follow that with Anne Mojanoff reflecting on The Challenge Of Being The Caregiver and dealing with the chaos of cancer and cancer treatment.

Alan Cohen writes: "When an event sobers us, it dashes cold water on our face to extricate us from the drunkenness of the meaningless activities we often engage in." He shines light on the fact that our lives are often chaotic due to the daily "addictions" or addictive behaviors that plague us in "Getting Sober and Remembering What Is Real".

Rachel Harris, psychologist and author of the book "Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD, and Anxiety" walks us through the stages and benefits of a journey with Grandmother Ayahuasca which can help bring our life from the chaos of emotional pain to being in harmony with our own self and with our past in "Ayahuasca and The Need to Feel Loved and Accepted".

We also bring you many articles on a variety of topics such as "chunking", coffee, color, climate change, and more, as well as a few more articles dealing with various forms of addiction. The first step in dealing with any type of addictive behavior is admitting we have a problem... Hopefully this week's articles can help us all identify where we are stuck in repetitive patterns, lead the way to develop new behaviors and habits, and assist us to move on to create a better life for ourselves and a better world for all.

Wishing you enjoyable insightful reading, and of course a wonder-full, joy-full, and loving week.

The Power of Showing Up and Helping

Written by Joyce Vissell

The Power of Showing Up and Helping

I was listening to a news reporter in Texas listing all of the destruction, and then he started talking about all of the volunteers who have showed up to help, and he started to cry. Through tears, he said that he has never seen humanity show up in such beautiful ways to be of service and help others in need.

The Challenge Of Being The Caregiver

The Challenge Of Being The Caregiver

Almost in disbelief we were confronted by Barry’s diagnosis of throat and thyroid cancer, which within weeks lead to many medical consultations, pathology tests, ultrasounds and on to surgery. As his partner and then caregiver, the challenge of supporting him through that journey was daunting.

Getting Sober and Remembering What Is Real

Getting Sober and Remembering What Is Real

When an event sobers us, it dashes cold water on our face to extricate us from the drunkenness of the meaningless activities we often engage in. We are awakened from the addictive behaviors we use to distract ourselves from our pain.

From Chaos to Order: Planning a New Life with New Habits

Written by Walter Ling, MD

From Chaos to Order: Planning a New Life with New Habits

When a habit forms, it indicates that the experience has been repeated a lot. When we call addictive behaviors “habits,” we mean the addict is doing drugs and engaging in drug-related activities so much, often to the exclusion of virtually everything else, that they become automatic.

Ayahuasca and The Need to Feel Loved and Accepted

Written by Rachel Harris, PhD

Ayahuasca and The Need to Feel Loved and Accepted

In ayahuasca ceremonies, people sometimes view visionary home movies of their childhood while maintaining an outside observer’s perspective. At other times, they relive a childhood event as if it were happening in the ceremonial moment; they regress in age to the time of the scene. Either way, ceremonies often open up deep feelings of wanting to be accepted and loved.
