Marie T. Russell's Daily Inspiration

The focus for today is:  I put myself in other people's shoes.

We're all familiar with the Golden Rule: "“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And then also the concept of walking a mile in someone else's shoes.

When we are unclear as to how to act or react, we could benefit from putting ourselves in the other person's shoes and seeing how we would like to be treated, or responded to. Another way to look at this is the term empathy. Feeling what the other is feeling, or what they would feel if a certain action was to take place.

This is a very simple form of morality that children can understand. If they have a pile of candy and don't want to share... for them to put themselves in the other child's situation, they can see that sharing is the right action . If their friend had a pile of candy (or fruit),they would want the friend to share with them. This concept also applies to hurtful words, actions, and thoughts.

Today's Focus was inspired from the InnerSelf.com article:

Basics of Meditation: Why and How To Meditate
which was excerpted from the book:
In This Very Life: Liberation Teachings of the Buddha
