InnerSelf.com welcomes your inner Self

As I got ready to write the introduction for this week's new issue, a song popped into my head: "We Are The World." The song was written for USA for Africa to help raise consciousness of the plight of children in 3rd-world countries. Yet as I reflected on the lyrics, it is obvious that the message applies to all of us, everywhere.

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true, we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out, and there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe, there's no way we can fall
Let us realize, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one.

And those lyrics encapsulate the message of the InnerSelf articles for this week (and every week, actually), We are the ones who can help make a better day, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of our family, our neighbors, our town, our country, and the whole wide world (and the world wide web). We are not bystanders, we are participants -- even when we think we are not participating, that very lack of action makes a difference.

For example, many have said, and probably still say, that it doesn't matter if they vote... after all, one vote doesn't make a difference... Perhaps that is true... yet if one million people say that, and don't vote, then it does make a difference, doesn't it. So our action, as small as we may think it is, added to the actions of others, can make a huge difference, whether we're talking about voting, energy use, food choices, inequality, etc.

All of our actions (or lack thereof) do matter. In one of the articles (link below) that presents information as to why we should remove our shoes when entering a house, the image that sticks in my mind is a toddler crawling on that floor and accumulating on their tiny hands all the germs, dirt, and god knows what else that we dragged in on our shoes. And then, later, as the children play on the floor, it ends up on their fingers which later find their way into their mouth or their eyes...

And in the same way, all of our actions have consequences that we may not be aware of. Thus, it's time to look at our lives, to look around us, and see the current, and future, consequences of our actions (or inactions). And remember that we are all part of the same world, the same planet, and as we come together, no matter our race, our gender, our political leanings, and choose harmony, choose health, choose well-being, we can create a better world, right here and right now.

It's time to get off our chairs, stop watching our screens so intently, and instead start watching our lives with that same intensity, and make the changes that are needed to create a better world.  So this week, as you read the InnerSelf articles, and as you go about your life, ask yourself: What small shift can I make today? What intention can I carry into the world? Because, after all is said and done, "we are the ones who make a brighter day...
