Will We Say "Enough Already!" Before It Is Too Late?

Some things are so sad that we might like to bypass and ignore them completely. But can we do so when lives are being affected and our ignorance causes more and more deaths? Especially when those lives are of innocent beings who have no way of protecting themselves?

This is the case with what is happening to the bird population on Midway, a national wildlife refuge in the heart of the Pacific. It is located close to the Pacific Garbage Patch. And unfortunately, these birds are not aware that the colorful stuff they see floating in the ocean is not fish -- it is plastic and it equals death for them.

What is happening to these birds is simply a catastrophic example of the damage that we humans have inflicted and are inflicting on animals all over the planet. The results of our consumption and our wastefulness has consequences much bigger than we realize when we use and throw out plastic, styrofoam, etc.

Journey to Paradise?

Chris Jordan has journeyed to the island of Midway to film the beauty as well as the catastrophe that awaits the tens of thousands of albatross born on the island. He explains:

The MIDWAY film project is a powerful visual journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times.

You can view two different trailers for the film. The first is more mellow, the second very heartbreaking. Perhaps by watching these we can become sensitized to the needs of the other beings living on this beautiful planet and ensure their safety by discontinuing the actions we take that endanger them (and ourselves).
