How to Follow Your Intuition—Without First Needing Proof

by Happy Ali, author of the book: The Intuition Bible.

Many people have no problem identifying as intuitive, while others shy away from the word altogether. I have worked with clients who refuse to give credit to their intuitive nature yet are always using their inner guidance.

I believe that everyone is intuitive, but there is a difference between being intuitive and using our intuition as a consistent and deliberate source of information. Different issues arise when people begin the deliberate process of listening to the variations of their inner knowledge. The first and most important issue is trust.

Here are my answers to the most frequently asked questions:

Why should I bother tapping into higher intelligence and my intuitive abilities?

People often complain that life doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but what if you had an instruction manual that was designed just for you? What if your source of information had your best intentions at heart and didn’t come from sources with ulterior motives?

It is often difficult to know whose advice to take, or whose belief system to follow, because everyone has their own opinion as to what makes sense and what is right.

Tapping into your inner wisdom can make life easier in countless ways. Yet the biggest objection I hear is that receiving intuition is never easy. I disagree.

The easiest form of inner knowing is resonance, which basically determines whether you resonate with something or not. That is something we are all familiar with and use as a compass quite often. We all use our level of resonance with people, information, situations, or places as a barometer for how appropriate something is for us. Most of the time, if we don’t resonate with something, we tend to shy away from it.

Resonance is the most basic level of intuition. Have you ever met someone or been in a situation and immediately felt drawn or repelled without being consciously aware of it? That is generally your inner knowing telling you that something is aligned (or not) with your current life trajectory.

It is important to note that in the case of resonance, it does not always lead you to what is best for you in the long run, but instead only shows you what is aligned with your current life trajectory. It is often indiscriminate and does not care if you are on the route to success or a downhill spiral. It just lets you know what external things align with the path you are on now. Some people are very conscious of that feeling and follow it, and some people can’t quite put their finger on it, but we all have it, and it plays a huge role in what we are drawn to.

As we level up our intuition, the feelings and insights become clearer and more vivid. In the beginning, you will just have a gut feeling about something, but with enough practice, many receive in-depth information as if it was coming from a familiar intelligence beyond their personal knowledge. Many have written books that were received from higher frequencies outside of the ones we are most accustomed to, but there are still many benefits for those who never reach that stage of informational access.

The ideal and most practical benefit of intuition is being able to know what is appropriate for you in the present moment.

Many moments in life feel extremely uncertain, and those are the times when having a strongly developed intuition comes in handy because you will know the essence of what is around the bend. Having foresight can decrease doubt, confusion, frustration, anxiety, and anger, and even prevent the downward spiral that might lead to depression. Intuition offers a big-picture perspective that generally calms the mind and eases negative emotions.

I know that when I am in an unknown situation, checking in with my intuition can be very useful because I will know the best move to make. I can pretty much say that my intuition has never led me astray, and problems often arise when I ignore my inner knowing, no matter how loud it gets. It doesn’t matter how well you develop your intuition. If you don’t learn to act on it, it is of very little benefit.

I like to think of my intuition as my wise guide that is always there to assist me, and how well and in how much detail I can hear my guide completely depends on me and my current state of being. Sometimes, we are in a state that allows the clearest form of communication, and sometimes all we get is just a few tiny tingles on the body. Our energy receptors are not always loud, but once we learn to decipher its presence in different stages, we can make use of any little information we receive.

How can I trust that what I hear is intuition and not just my mind making things up?

This question becomes amplified as people enter the advanced stages of receiving intuitive messages, such as channeling. But in every case, you must see if the information is valuable. If the information is valuable, and it was outside of your current stream of consciousness and thoughts, then it doesn’t matter if it’s from the conscious you or the higher version of you.

I understand that people want to be able to tell if the source of the information is them or not. What will surely help are time, practice, and heightened awareness. It is important to be aware and recognize instances when you receive information that is later verified.

Trusting guidance is a very valid concern. But while practice and effort are often necessary to get more in touch with the inner voice, it’s also possible to try too hard. We have all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect,” but striving for perfection, especially in the beginning, can get in the way of opening the channels that deliver clearer information. I explore this more later, but in short, the need for certainty and perfection from the get-go will hinder your progress.

In the beginning, it’s better to look at developing intuition like a game and be less serious about it. When we are playful, we tap into the creative parts of the mind that do not hinder the flow of intuition. In the early stages, it is better to care less about the validity of what is coming through and focus more on opening the channels that bring forth information.

For the best results, my advice is to go into it with as little expectation as possible. I know this might seem counterintuitive, but it is part of the process of accessing the part of ourselves that doesn’t rely on traditional logic. The more rigid our expectations, the more pressure we put on the process and the slower our progress.

Your progress will not be linear. This is the nature of tapping into an unpredictable source of knowledge. But all who go on this journey will awaken something dormant and improve the quality of their lives.

Don’t I need to have a special gift to tap into my inner wisdom?

The answer is no and yes. No, you don’t need to have a special gift, one that is exclusive to a select few. Anyone with a strong desire can tap into their inner wisdom. But yes, you must nurture your abilities until they feel like a special gift.

We are all born with gifts that are designed to give us access to higher wisdom. These abilities are not special to me, you, or anyone. They are part of our human makeup, how we are designed and part of our divinity. You are no less divine than any master who has walked this earth.

The spark of light that resides within you is the same spark that resides within every single person in this world. That is not to say that everyone has equal access to it as an adult. Maybe children have similar access, but once we become domesticated and conditioned adults, we tend to rely less on divine perspectives and need scientific proof to validate our experiences11

Small babies instinctively prefer some people over others. They can feel energy in a way that adults have forgotten or simply ignore. We are all born with an inner guide and inner voice that is our birthright. It is ours to reclaim when we are ready.

People are trained to forgo their inner voice and seek guidance from their logical, rational side. But our divinity shows up in ways that science can’t replicate or verify. The closest science has come is with the aid of modern brain (and heart) scans plus cameras that can detect energetic fields. But machines can detect only a small fraction of what is actually going on.

The right side of the brain gives access to many of our special intuitive abilities, and the left side is devoted to logic. To access our abilities, we need to check logic at the door.

I am guilty at times of mistrusting guidance because I feel the need to be reliable as a source of information. But after a long losing battle with my relentless inner messengers, I usually opt to trust the inner voice and the messenger more often than not.

Intuition does not fit the mold created by the logical mind, which loves to categorize and understand everything that happens. Our logical mind likes to see the world in black-and-white terms, but the world, and most of life’s unique experiences, represent an infinite number of shades of gray. We must open up our minds to play and allow ourselves to be surprised.
