THE UNKNOWN QUANTITY: The universe usually likes to keep us guessing, a fact that most predictive astrologers will quickly acknowledge. There is always an unknown factor involved in any planetary event; this is particularly true of an eclipse, especially a total eclipse, which tends to involve even more of a "surprise factor" than a partial eclipse.

Unpredictability is a quality for which the planet Uranus is also famous. This is why many astrologers suggest that we "expect the unexpected" when Uranus is involved in planetary activity.

Our eclipse this Tuesday can thus be considered VERY Uranian, since it is both a Total Lunar Eclipse and the Moon will be closely aligned with Uranus for the event. In fact, given how the chart for the lunation looks, we'll need to consider it somewhat like playing the game "52-Card Pickup." The only thing we can count on, is that if we throw a deck of cards up into the air, how and where the individual cards land will be haphazard and very hard to predict ahead of time.

FULL MOON AND T-SQUARE: The Full Moon that accompanies this week's Total Lunar Eclipse will perfect at 3:01 a.m. PST on Tuesday, November 8. At that time, the Moon will be at exactly 16°00´ Taurus, with the Sun at the same degree of Scorpio. Uranus will be very close to the Moon, at 16°56´ Taurus.

This is just the beginning of the story, however. Three other planets are also strongly active in the eclipse chart, in hard aspect to the Full Moon and forming a pressure-filled "fixed T-square." This configuration represents great tension that is looking for a place to erupt.

To visualize this grouping of the planets, imagine a giant letter "T" in space. At one end of the cross-bar of the "T" are the Moon and Uranus in Taurus. At the other end of the cross-bar are the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Scorpio. And, at the base of the stem of the "T" is Saturn in Aquarius.

With this T-square in effect, people may be especially opinionated, rigid, stubborn, and willful. Strong emotions come to the surface. Reactions are exaggerated, and some may act or speak compulsively or irrationally. There is also a desire to control or manipulate situations, perhaps in an effort to create stability and security.

A SPIRITUAL TEST: This Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse will test our flexibility and our detachment. We might call it a test of our "spiritual maturity," which includes having compassion for the human condition as well as the ability to maintain objectivity, to not get caught up in the drama. In other words, we will benefit by once again calling upon the keen vision and higher perspective of Eagle, one of the totems of Scorpio.

This is also a "North Node" eclipse, meaning that the Moon is near the lunar North Node at the time of the event. The North Node is a point in space that represents humanity’s current evolutionary growth path.

With the North Node in Taurus right now, our higher evolution depends on our ability to cultivate the qualities of patience, persistence, forgiveness, and gratitude. We are called to have good personal boundaries, to be aware of our own values but also to respect the needs of others. Since Taurus rules Mother Nature and the environment, our collective future also depends on our choosing to value, honor, and support the natural world, including the animal and plant kingdoms.

The spiritual challenge of this eclipse is asking us to rise above the very human tendencies to get caught up in the drama, to become emotionally enmeshed with others, to overreact, and to resist or try to control what we do not (as yet) understand. If we see everything as either black or white, it is almost impossible not to become self-righteous and judgmental. But, this inevitably lowers our frequency, even if we are convinced that we are "right" and someone else is "wrong."

Helping us meet this challenge, the planet Neptune is in harmonious aspect with the Sun and the Moon at the time of the eclipse. As we move through this eclipse portal, Neptune's influence will assist us in accessing the wisdom of the High Heart, which can help us choose attitudes and actions that resonate with our Divine Self.

FIXED STAR ACTIVATION: The Moon activates the primarily positive energies of the fixed star Delta Cassiopeiae at the time of the Full Moon. Here is a brief description of that star's influence, from astrologer Roderick Kidston:

“This star has the energy of Shakti; a leaping life force that energizes, grows, prospers, and rewards. It can be described as a ‘star of honour’ when working at its best.
“But beware of becoming self-entitled and arrogant, for this is the pride that comes before a fall. By maintaining a true perspective and cultivating self-respect rather than self-aggrandizement, you will find the Shakti force of this star propelling you forward, burnishing your best talents and helping you find your best path.”

DAILY ASPECTS: Here are this week's most important planetary aspects, with my brief interpretations of each.

Monday
Mercury sesquiquadrate Jupiter: It may be hard to remain calm and detached today, as the urge to express opinions is strong.

Tuesday
Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse 3:01 a.m. PST: The energies of this Total Lunar Eclipse will affect everyone on the planet, but the physical event will be visible in North and Central America, Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of South America.
Sun conjunct Mercury: Our minds are powerfully affected by our emotions today. Words tend to be overly dramatic and may be used to manipulate or control.
Mercury opposite Uranus: This is highly nervous energy. It may be hard to focus or to clearly communicate. The mental train is easily derailed. Differences of perspective seem especially polarizing.

Wednesday
Sun opposite Uranus: Behaviors may be erratic, surprising, and dramatic today. People are restless, irritable, rebellious, and reactionary.
Uranus trine Ceres: Personal self-worth is reinforced by taking independent action and resisting conformity. These actions may be in support of the environment or to defend the rights of women and children.
Mercury square Saturn: We may see the immediate results of words spoken in haste yesterday. Obstacles could prevent clear communication and there may be travel detours or delays. This aspect can also manifest as pessimistic or "doomsday" thinking.

Thursday
Venus trine Neptune: We are able to open our hearts to feel compassion and to be supportive of others.

Friday
Sun square Saturn: Insecurities and fears may be heightened today. We may feel frustrated or defeated.
Venus quincunx Eris and quincunx Mars: Venus forms a yod ("finger of God") configuration with Eris and Mars today. Relationships, values, and/or the economy are in the spotlight. New developments in these areas require an attitude adjustment. We may need to be more honest about our motivations, both with ourselves and with a loved one.

Saturday
Mercury trine Neptune: This aspect helps us to express deep caring through our words, to write creatively, or to access spiritual wisdom.

Sunday
Venus sextile Pluto: This aspect encourages honesty in relationships, which may help deepen intimacy.
Mars sextile Eris, Mercury quincunx Mars, Mercury quincunx Eris: Mercury is at the focal point of a yod configuration today, requiring that we reconsider how we share our thoughts and feelings. A confrontational style is not likely to bring desired results.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: You may feel a strong need to share your thoughts and ideas this year, even if you must overcome underlying insecurities about your communication skills, and whether or not your words are well-received by others. In fact, relationships are in the spotlight this year, as you come to terms with your conflicting needs for loyalty and commitment on one hand, and freedom and autonomy on the other. Helping you navigate these challenges, you are more able to access your intuition and compassion this year. These gifts may manifest especially through your writing or other creative endeavors. (Solar Return Sun conjunct Mercury, conjunct Venus, square Saturn, opposite Uranus, trine Neptune)
