Giving Thanks by Giving Blessings
by Pierre Pradervand.
May these blessings bring you peace, inspiration, courage... whatever your need may be. Blessings take many forms so that they may meet different needs.
I believe blessing can be an important tool in healing the world by healing our own vision of the world, so that rather than despairing over the number of problems facing our planet and its inhabitants, we rejoice in having a tool to help solve them.
I bless this day in the fullness of good it already contains, in the many occasions it offers to listen deeply, to be of service to others, to express gratitude moment by moment and to keep my mind so filled with love, beauty and joy that no negativity can find even the tiniest crack in which to set foot.
I bless this day in the infinite opportunities it gives me to love: to love and bless every human I meet, every beast or bird I pass by, every plant I behold, for all are but the manifold expressions of the infinite Life that undergirds all.
Truly, I bless this day for the wonderful adventure it can become as I walk through it with the eyes of wonder rather than boredom, use every opportunity to express peace rather than irritation, and chose love over fear.
Thank you, Life, for this day.
A Blessing For Life’s Abundance
Blessing and gratitude are in a sense the two sides of the same coin. Gratitude for a situation or a person implies necessarily that they constitute some kind of blessing.
Infinite Love, we bless You for the unbounded blessings that descend on us from all sides. Truly You are constantly opening the sluice gates of heaven and pouring on us such blessings that there often seems no room to receive them all – or even to number them. We bless you for the incredible beauty and abundance of nature that is pouring its gifts on us season after season, year after year.
We bless You for the innumerable people who cross our paths and enter our lives and enrich our existence by their different vision of things and the challenges they force us to face.
We thank you for that quite incredible support machine You have given us called the human body. Its intricate workings simply defy any attempt to describe it and the greatest scientists can only bow their heads in front of its perfection that defies our wildest imagination.
We bless you for our daily bread which takes such varied forms, and for homes that offer support, warmth and peace.
We bless you for the innumerable difficulties that are as many opportunities to grow, expand our horizons and love more.
(Please continue this blessing with your own themes of gratitude.)
Spending a Day in Gratitude
Such a great deal has been written in recent years about the power of gratitude it appears unnecessary to belabor this point. It is impossible – repeat, impossible – to hold at the same time the slightest negativity of any sort and authentic gratitude. Their coexistence is simply impossible, and the choice is always ours.
May this day be a constant canticle of gratitude from now on till I retire tonight.
May I welcome any negative event with gratitude for the growth it will produce in my life.
May I face every single encounter with gratitude for the manifestation of divine love it represents.
May I face any disgruntled, depressed, angry or sad face with gratitude that my blessings can uplift and help dissolve such attitudes.
May I eat my meals with gratitude for all those who have participated in bringing them onto my table.
However tedious, unimportant or boring my work may appear, may I perform it with the understanding that the very act of giving thanks can profoundly transform it.
And above all, may I understand that the choice between complaint, indifference and gratitude is mine at every single moment of my life.
May Love Make a Bridge
It is such a privilege for me to be sharing these blessings with you. So I am the one who thanks you – for really “listening” to their message and sharing them further. This next blessing is adapted from Singing the Living Tradition by the Unitarian Universalist Association and is called “Love Makes a Bridge.”
May love make a bridge from heart to heart, and hand to hand.
May love find a way when laws are blind, and freedom banned.
May love lift the hopes that force and fear have beaten down.
May love break the chains and give us strength to stand our ground.
May love make a bridge that winds may shake, yet not destroy.
May love carry faith through life and death to endless joy.
A Blessing by Eileen Caddy
The following blessing is by one of the spiritual luminaries of the end of the last quarter century, Eileen Caddy, co-founder with her husband Peter of the world’s first eco-spiritual community, Findhorn, in Forres, Scotland. It is taken from her book Footprints on the Path (Findhorn Press). I have very slightly adapted it.
May you find true happiness and contentment
Wherever you are, whomever you are with, no matter what you are doing.
For true happiness stems from deep within.
May outer conditions never rob you
Of your inner happiness which no one and nothing can disturb.
May joy and happiness fill your heart.
May you realize how mightily blessed you are
And give constant thanks
For those many blessings which are yours.
