THE MAIN EVENT this coming week is our New Moon in Cancer on Monday. While this lunation has many qualities to explore, it has one trait, in particular, that is notable in its absence: It is our first lunation since the New Moon on May 22 that is not an eclipse!

We might be sighing in relief to be finally exiting the intense and other-worldly energies of eclipse season. But, we need to remember that while eclipses tend to be most influential around the time they occur, they actually create a field of resonance that lasts for the next few months, until the next eclipse season begins.

THIS MEANS we will be working with the issues raised by our three eclipses until mid November. In particular, we want to monitor events that unfold around the three-month marks, when the Sun has moved 90 degrees beyond its position at each of the eclipses. Those dates are September 7 (reflecting back to the June 5 eclipse), September 22 (reflecting back to the June 21 eclipse), and October 6 (reflecting back to the July 4 eclipse).

Each of these dates represents a "check-in" point, when there are likely to be further developments that we can connect back to the original eclipse date.

THE NEW MOON occurs at 10:32 a.m. PDT on July 20, at 28°26′ Cancer. Astrologers call this lunation a "black moon," because it is the second New Moon in a solar month. (This is different than a blue moon, which is when two Full Moons occur in the same calendar month.)

In this case, we have two New Moons in Cancer this year, since the Sun entered the sign just before the New Moon/Solar Eclipse on June 21. That lunation was in the very first degree of Cancer, and Monday's New Moon is very near the last degree of the sign.

A black moon provides an interesting mix of symbolism for us to ponder. We think of New Moons as a time of new starts; and yet the degree of the lunation is more indicative of a completion. Because of this, we need to consider this upcoming lunar cycle as a time that will bring both endings and beginnings, many of which will have long-term significance.

INDEED, this black moon is the beginning of a much longer phase, one that lasts until the next black moon occurs, in March 2023. Knowing this encourages us to have patience, because what is being initiated is an auspicious, longer-term chapter in our lives.

Astrologer Sarah Varcas writes:

"A black moon is a particularly powerful new moon, which augurs a significant new phase. We can use its energy to prepare for shifts in our inner and outer worlds so powerful they may change the very course of our life ... Once the black moon arrives, a shift in the fabric of the universe is underway, often manifesting as a new life theme that develops and matures across the coming two to three years."

THIS BLACK MOON has sacred and even karmic overtones, especially since it follows on the heels of three eclipses. It portends a major reset of life direction for many.

We will want to pay special attention to where this New Moon falls in our natal astrology charts; the house location will tell us a great deal about what area of life is being activated throughout this thirty-month process. (Please visit the Houses page of my website for a reminder of house meanings.)

We also want to notice which planets or points in our charts are at 26 to 29 degrees of cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) or at 0 to 2 degrees of fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), since their symbolism will also be woven into new developments. (Please see the Planets page of my website for planetary meanings.)

ANOTHER significant feature of Monday's New Moon is that it opposes Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn, and also squares Eris in Aries. The opposition to Saturn is especially tight, since the planet is at 28°39′ Capricorn at the time of the lunation, only 11 arc minutes away from being precisely opposite the Sun and Moon.

If you've been following planetary influences this year, you know the tremendous impact we've been feeling from the Saturn-Pluto and Jupiter-Pluto alignments and the Pluto-Eris square. Incredibly, all of these planets are linked together this week through their combined aspects to the New Moon. Tensions are also heightened for the lunation because Eris stations retrograde on Monday.

We can expect that this lunar cycle will bring important new developments and revelations in the COVID-19 crisis, in the Black Lives Matter movement, in the battle between individual rights and government controls, and other related issues.

WITH SATURN being the strongest player in this dynamic New Moon, we can expect a significant reality check, one that causes us to refocus our attention. Evidence becomes irrefutable, and we more clearly see the results of certain actions or inaction.

Ultimately, Saturn requires personal discipline, patience, and responsibility if we are to successfully navigate its lessons. When dealing with a lack of these internal qualities, external Saturn figures (employers, administrations, governments, other authority figures) tend to exert greater controls and limitations.

THIS IS NOT a lighthearted New Moon, but it can set us on a positive new course if we use its energies consciously. We may be primarily motivated by Eris and the need to fight against injustice, or by the Sun/Moon in Cancer and the desire for greater emotional or physical security, or by the group of planets in Capricorn and a drive to achieve a higher purpose.

Whatever the stressors we deal with at the time of this lunation, we will benefit most if we stay awake and aware. Impulsive actions may meet with resistance, only causing increased frustration or hopelessness.

Remember to breathe into your heart and come to center before making decisions or taking action. This will help assure that your next steps are in agreement with your higher self. The voice of our higher guidance always brings a sense of peace, even if we will be taking risks by following it.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: Since early this year, you have been feeling pressure from Saturn to renegotiate your sense of purpose, and to reconfigure some personally fulfilling area of your life. A process is underway to help move you more powerfully into alignment with your cosmic destiny. As you move into and through your personal New Year, you will be deciding what is worth your emotional investment, and what represents only detours. It is time to prune the tree of dead branches and root suckers, so that you have all the energy you need for the journey up the mountain. (Solar Return Sun semisquare Venus, opposite Saturn)
