THE LANDSCAPE shifts beneath our feet this week, as three sign changes occur: retrograde Uranus returns to Aries, the nodal axis crosses the threshold into Cancer/Capricorn, and Jupiter begins its year-long trek through Sagittarius. In addition, we have a New Moon and other planetary aspects that contribute to the awareness that we are entering new territory.
Tuesday is the most compelling day, with a great deal of activity crowded into just an hour's time. First, Uranus squares the lunar nodes at 9:57 a.m. (PST), the nodes then change signs just 10 minutes later (at 10:08 a.m.), and Uranus re-enters Aries at 10:58 a.m. This dance between the planet of Higher Consciousness and the karmic North and South Nodes indicates the potential for a radical shift in how we approach issues that are currently presenting themselves.
THE LUNAR NODES are points in space that indicate where humanity is needing a course correction, if we are to progress on our evolutionary path. The South Node represents qualities we are meant to leave behind, and the North Node shows what growth is needed.
For the past 18 months, the North Node has been in Leo, with the South Node in Aquarius. Over that time, we have been challenged to shift from apathy to involvement, from mental distance to heart connection.
THIS WEEK, the North Node moves into Cancer while the South Node enters Capricorn (yes, the nodes travel backward through the zodiac). Over the next year and a half, evolutionary progress requires that we move beyond being so individualistic and goal-driven, that we see the folly of caring more about the bottom line than we do about the welfare and well-being of others. The North Node in Cancer calls us to develop greater empathy and unselfishness, and to move through life with greater veneration for the feelings of others.
In essence, we must do an about-face, much like the character Scrooge in Dickens' novella, "A Christmas Carol." As the plot of this story unfolds, the miserly, miserable Scrooge who appears in the first scenes eventually transforms into a generous, joyful Scrooge who freely opens his heart and his pocketbook by the end.
To facilitate his transformation, our main character is visited by three ghosts, beings who show him scenes that open his eyes to the truth of his life and the results of his selfish actions. Will humanity also need to rendezvous with our own ghosts of the Past, Present, and Future, before we see the results of our current trajectory and make a vital shift of awareness? What needs to happen for us to wake up, for society to alter course?
We may have some preliminary answers to those questions this week, and in the next few days and weeks, as the nodes become established in their new signs. But I am also anticipating that events next April will be highly instructive, when first Pluto and then Saturn align with the South Node for a "karmic reckoning" of sorts.
IT IS EXTRAORDINARY that Uranus is exactly squaring the nodes as both change signs this Tuesday. Who orchestrated this timing, we have to wonder! Given that the shift is from fixed signs, which tend to resist change, into cardinal signs, which are the initiators of action, we can expect a bit of a jolt, designed to get us to pay attention and to awaken.
But Uranus, as always, is the wild card in the planetary deck. It works through surprising or sudden events, which by definition cannot be predicted. It also stirs up electrical energy, so we can anticipate a return of the nervous stomach that many have been dealing with of late.
All of which means we need to keep our calming tools handy this week. Meditation, mindfulness, deep breathing, candle gazing -- give yourself the time to experience whatever you know helps you feel more centered and grounded.
ANOTHER MAJOR EVENT this week is Jupiter's change of signs, from Scorpio into Sagittarius. As I've mentioned before, Jupiter in truth-revealing Scorpio has exactly coincided with the emergence and growth of the #MeToo and It's Time movements. What can we expect over the next year, with Jupiter in expansive Sagittarius?
Jupiter, as the largest planet in our known solar system, acts as a magnifying lens; it exaggerates our experience of the areas ruled by the sign it is transiting through. The ultimate goals of Sagittarius include the search for meaning and the pursuit of an ideal. In mundane reality, this translates into an interest in religion and philosophy, lawsuits and attorneys, higher education and publishing, long-distance travel and adventure, imports and international relations, and "foreign" cultures and countries. We can expect all of these themes to increase in our awareness over the coming year.
ON A PERSONALITY LEVEL, we will have choices of how we want to use this amplified Sagittarian influence. When our frequency is high, Jupiter in Sag will enable us to feel more optimistic, hopeful, visionary, idealistic, benevolent, open minded, and expansive than we have in the recent past. But, we could also be tempted to fall into the lower vibrational attributes of Sagittarius, which include self-righteousness, dogmatism, fanaticism, gullibility, a lack of restraint, and self-indulgence.
Certainly, in the wake of so many secrets being uncovered over the past 12 months while Jupiter was in investigative Scorpio, it makes sense that lawsuits will increase over the coming year. And, it then follows suit that self-righteousness will be hard to avoid, if we become involved at that level. But, looking at the vibrational scale, do we really want to fall that low? What will it accomplish, other than keeping us in the realms of conflict and judgment?
THE NEW MOON is on Wednesday, at 8:01 a.m. PST. At that time, the Sun and Moon are aligned at 15°11′ Scorpio, and in positive aspect to both Neptune and Pluto. This is an encouraging sign, that we will be able to let go of the drama and trauma of the past, but also remain empowered and on purpose.
Another hopeful indicator is the Sabian symbol associated with the degree of the lunation. The keyword is "Faith," and the symbol reads:
"A girl's face breaking into a smile: The fervent reaching out on the part of the young at heart to new experiences."
Here's a bit of astrologer Dane Rudhyar's interpretation of the symbol:
"Faith in life and in other human beings enables us to go forth toward relationships with whatever attracts our senses or stirs our imagination. Smiling is a conscious acceptance of relationship, thus a choice. We are free to choose between love and hate."
It is interesting that the feeling-sense of this image is more reminiscent of positive-minded Sagittarius than it is of depth-seeking Scorpio. It's also very in keeping with the new trails being blazed by Jupiter in Sag in the coming weeks.
Please join me in keeping the faith!
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: A new year begins for you in more ways than one, Scorpio. Many issues have come to the surface over the past year, but you now have opportunities to move beyond the limitations of the past, whether they be from this life or other lifetimes. Your journey may require you to forgive yourself and others, but as you do, your sense of personal power and purpose is strengthened. Remember to hold strong in your dedication to that which is most inspiring in your life.
