What Is A Visionary Activist? Can You Be One?

What Is A Visionary Activist? How Can You Be One?

A visionary activist understands that their every thought, feeling, word, and action generates a ripple effect throughout the field of consciousness, unlimited by space and time. He/she is committed to focusing their energy towards positive change in world. They are obsessed with achieving one impossible goal, from the inside out.

You may have never heard the term before. I hadn’t until it floated out of the ether one evening during a brainstorm with my wife. I describe a visionary activist as any person who directs their attention and intention to catalyze political or social or spiritual change. They combine vision with action for positive impact.

Who Are You?

When you look up at the stars on a clear night, do you feel small or large?

It’s easy to feel small… you’re looking at something vaster than you can compute. But think of a bowl with a marble in it. Which is bigger? The bowl, obviously, because it contains the marble.

So, returning to you and the stars, which seems bigger now? Are you the bowl (your awareness of the starry sky) or are you the marble (your body and ego)? If you identify as a separate human then you’re the marble, you’re small, and the bowl is the vast starry sky. This makes it inevitable to become discouraged when you ask, “What can one person do?”

But if you identify with the awareness that contains the vastness of the visible cosmos, then you are large. You are the bowl that holds the marble. You are consciousness itself and consciousness contains everything. The moment you identify as consciousness, rather than just as a separate individual, you become that vastness.

This transformation of identity opens a door to actualizing your potential for exerting extraordinary impact. Conscious within consciousness, you can influence the entire matrix of our numberless universes in this very moment.

The same principle that says “you cannot disturb a flower without troubling a star” means that every breath and thought impacts… everything. As it always has. As it always is in every moment.

“Who Can One Person Be?”

“Who can one person be?” Someone conscious within the consciousness that contains everything. Suddenly, you don’t feel so small and ineffective, right? “What can (this) one person do?”

You can become what I call a visionary activist, broadcasting who you are through everything you do to impact consciousness. Example: wash a dish with love and inspire forgiveness in strangers 3,000 miles away.

Try on this empowered, non-local identity the next time you and the stars come out to play together. Perhaps you’ll feel that shift from “What can one person do?” to “Who can one person be?”

The Observer Effect

Millions of people are familiar with The Observer Effect, which states that the act of observing influences what is being observed. Millions more of us know about the power of prayer and the “hundredth monkey” phenomenon. These are all examples of the potential for visionary activism.

The guiding principle: how we express ourselves (thoughts, words, feelings, and actions) always has an impact. The proposition to prove: when we focus intention together it’s possible to trigger change in others at a distance, without needing direct physical contact or education.

A friend of mine participated in a now famous meditation experiment in Washington, DC in 1993. Between 800 and 4,000 TM practitioners meditated in the city over a two month period with the stated intention of lowering the crime rate. As reported online: “A week or so after the start of the study, violent crime (HRA crime: Homicides, rapes and aggravated assaults, measured by FBI Uniform Crime Statistics) began decreasing and continued to drop until the end of the experiment.

“Before the project the researchers had publicly predicted that the coherence group would reduce the trend of crime by 20%. This prediction had been ridiculed by the Chief of Police who asserted that the only thing that would decrease crime that much would be 20 inches of snow. In the end, the maximum decrease was 23.3% below the time series prediction for that period of the year.

“This significant reversal in the predicted crime trend occurred when the size of the group was at its largest in the final week of the project and during a blistering heat wave.”

Reports like this explode the doubt that someone like you or me — not holding public office, not having millions of dollars, and not being a rich celebrity with 25 million likes on Facebook — could make much of a difference. Imagine, meditating together to lower crime rates. What else might we accomplish by focusing our intentions at the quantum level?

Weekend meditators could never have transmitted enough energy to achieve that result in DC. Focusing conscious intention to produce results in the physical world is what visionary activists are able to do. Anyone can learn how .

Reaching Our ‘Now or Never Moment’

It’s not too late to change the script, to write in a happy ending, but this is not editing, it’s a rewrite of how the human story ends. We’re exposed to an unrelenting onslaught of dystopian programming every day, particularly in the torrent of sci-fi films that present inevitable future wastelands. Elon Musk warns that Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses the greatest danger to human survival but his solution is to colonize Mars, while failing to understand that we would just take the virus with us, in us.

Robots are fundamentally disconnected from the organic web of life. They represent the perfect crowning creation of disconnected humans, proudly building silicon replacements to survive in a toxic, burning world that is increasingly unfit for oxygen breathing, carbon based life forms. Disconnected humans can’t survive and won’t survive. Attempting to do so is a waste of time when we don’t have time.

The new story line? Transform ... or else. It’s now or never.

The Rise Of Visionary Activists

There are no celebrities in nature. Trees don’t compete against each other for headlines and awards. Alpha animals don’t train to become champions of their forest. Insects don’t vote for their next Great Leader.

The desire to be visibly great is distinctly human. It’s called “narcissism” and it’s fundamentally contrary to the way nature works. 99.9999% of us are not and will never be super stars. But we can become visionary activists, transformed humans fully interconnected in an organic predecessor to the Internet that some call “the innernet.”

There’s an indigenous principle: “Anyone can be chief, except someone who wants to be chief.” Our world is run by those who really want to be chief. They have big egos. They want power and control.

Visionary activists don’t crave power or glory or money. We contribute. We serve. We cooperate with each other and understand that humans are only as unique and intelligent as every other species, each in our own wonderful way. We ponder an intriguing question: “What might we accomplish together?” and we leave out no one.

Found online: “One biologist has been working on a simple language, the first to allow “two-way communication between humans and wild animals, Wired reports. Divers showed dolphins how to press on a keyboard to get items they wanted, and the dolphins showed interest, even bringing friends along. Communication worked best when humans first established a rapport with the dolphins, imitating them and making eye contact as humans do with each other.”

Humans are uniquely unique. We alone wield the power to destroy other species. Sadly, that’s exactly what we are already doing and at a record rate. Meanwhile, they keep us alive every time we eat – if we’re eating them, rather than the junk we make from chemicals. And, we can learn something vitally necessary from them about effective visionary activism.

For instance, starlings flock together in massive numbers. This phenomenon is called “murmuration.” From the Woodland Trust Nature Detectives: “A murmuration of more than six million starlings was recorded in 1999/2000 at Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve in Somerset... each starling follows the movement of the six birds flying closest beside it. And because they have lightning-fast reactions – under 100 milliseconds – and superb spatial awareness, if one bird changes speed or direction, those around it do too. This ripples through the murmuration and means that they’re able to fly at speeds of around 20mph without crashing in mid-air.” 3

What amazing coordination, synchronization, collaboration. Imagine if we could develop that skill. Birds do it by aligning with the six birds closest to them. What if we started paying attention to our immediate environment, to those we’re with, and learned how to thrive together? That sounds like a different sort of leadership paradigm.

Visionary activists don’t follow any leader; we fly together. We respect chemistry and the alchemical potential in every relationship.

As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Hence, the potential for visionary activists, most of whom will likely remain virtually invisible, yet participate on the “team.”
