We Are What We Eat... Are You a Funnel Cake?

Our children are the first generation in human history predicted to have a shorter life span than the previous generation.

Truth or Fiction?

Sad, but true.

Even with all the miracles of modern medicine — tiny instruments that can actually clear clogged arteries and medicines that counteract some of the damage we have done to our bodies — it’s true. The kinds and the amounts of food we are giving our children, combined with a lack of exercise, is killing them.

You're Feeding Them Funnel Cake? That Will Kill Them!

While recently at a water park, I saw a mother duckling and her eight little four-day-old chicks appear out of the bushes and begin waddling through the lounge chairs and the sea of people who “oohed” and “awed” at their incredible cuteness. One man began breaking off pieces of his funnel cake and feeding it to the baby chicks.

Do you know what funnel cake is? It’s cake batter “funneled” into a vat of fat, fried, and then doused in sugar. The manager of the park came running.

“Stop, stop feeding them; it creates bad habits. They’re supposed to learn to feed on their natural food sources,” she said.

Then she noticed what it was he was feeding the chicks. With urgency and compassion, she said, “My God, and you’re feeding them funnel cake. Don’t you know? That will kill them. Please stop.”

She was not joking. The baby chicks became ill, and I don’t know if they survived. The man was not only feeding the baby chicks funnel cake, but he was also feeding it to his own offspring. Needless to say, he and his children . . . waddled.

Just like the baby chicks, we too need to learn to eat from our natural food sources because our body — just like our home, our car, and our mind — is a storage space. What we put in it, we become. The old cliché “You are what you eat” is truer than we’d like to admit, and . . . I don’t want to be a funnel cake!

Free Cookie Day! Yeah! Yeah?

We Are What We Eat... Are You a Funnel Cake?Subway is by far my favorite fast-food restaurant. You can actually eat a very healthy lunch quicker than many fast-food joints fry up a “Happy Meal.” Subway also gave us Jared, who has become an inspiration to the world. He is as he seems. A really nice guy who is helping us shift our paradigm so that we can begin turning the tide to a more healthy future. Thanks, Jared.

That said, I do have one “beef” with Subway . . . Free Cookie Day.

Yeah, free cookies! I mean, what’s not to like? It’s free. When the “sandwich artist” says, “It’s free-cookie Tuesday; what kind would you like?” almost everyone they ask pauses for a moment.

Almost every person asked the question “Would you like a free cookie?” experiences confusion. This is brought on by the fact that most people who come to Subway are there to eat more healthfully. If they take the free cookie, they know they have pretty much taken the “healthy” right out of the meal.

Most end up taking it, though. It’s what we have been trained to do. What follows is almost always:“Well, I did choose whole-wheat bread; I think I’ve earned a few hundred empty calories.”

We Have Met the Enemy, and He Is Us!

We want to eat healthy for our body, mind, and spirit; and yet as a culture, we put impulse-buy junk foodnext to the impulse-buy gossip magazines at nearly every checkout stand in the modernized world. This is the most prominent retail space available!

We’re working against ourselves. We’re doing it to each other.

As it said in the classic comic strip Pogo: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”
