Oat Burgers

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup Tamari (low-sodium preferably)
  • 4 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 medium carrot, ground
  • 1/4 cup sesame seed, ground
  • 3/4 cup walnuts or sunflower seed (ground)
  • 1-2 tablespoons garlic powder

Method

1.  In a medium saucepan, bring water and tamari to a boil. Stir in oats, reduce heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and let cool. (I transfer oats to a large bowl and put under a fan.) 

2.  Meanwhile, put nuts and seeds into a mini-Oscar or blender to grind into a meal. Put into small bowl. Then, grind onion and carrot coarsely in mini-Oscar or regular food processor. Pour vegetable-nut mixture into oats, oil your hands, and mix well.

3.  Pour garlic powder on top (until it looks like snow-capped mountain peaks) and continue mixing. Some salt is optional.

4.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

5.  Lightly oil cookie sheets and hands. Form mixture into balls a little smaller than tennis balls and flatten into 1/2 inch thick patties using hands or a burger press. Bake on center rack for 35 minutes on one side, turn and continue baking for 25 minutes on the other side. Cool.

Serve as burgers with all the fixings or just as is. Lower fat by using less nut/seed mixture and substitute another finely ground carrot.
