Natural Areas

Everglades

The Everglades is one of the largest, most diverse, and unique ecosystems in the world. Much of it is protected within the National Park System, however, much of the lifeblood water drains to the Everglades from non-protected areas, thus polluting the sanctity of the waters in the Everglades. The Everglades is also losing water due to the drainage that has taken place for construction sites in developed areas on each side of it.

Florida Bay

Florida Bay is a huge area stretching from the southern mainland across open water to the Florida Keys and dotted by hundreds of mangrove islands. It is home to pelicans, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, white herons, bald eagles, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, manatees, and turtles just to name a few. Florida Bay is a vital wildlife sanctuary so docking a boat is only allowed on Bradley Key, Rabbit Key, North Nest Key, and North Sandy Key.

Biscayne Bay

Located just offshore from bustling Miami, this area is important both for what it protects, and because it serves as a shining example of how man and a protected environment can coexist in large urban areas. There are four different worlds of Biscayne National Park which are the mangrove shoreline, the waters of the bay, the keys, and the coral reefs.

The Keys

The Florida Keys are a 150-mile-long chain of islands made of fossilized coral rock. Similar to those found in the Everglades, the hammocks of the keys support gumbo-limbo, strangler fig, mahogany, and other tropical plants common to the West Indies.

Big Cypress Swamp

The Big Cypress Swamp gets its name from 2,400 square miles of big cypress trees. It is a classic swamp, home to snakes, alligators, bobcats, deer, black bears, and panthers. The Bald cypress trees can be seen at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.
