My
grandma was dying. I was afraid. I was afraid of death. I was afraid to be
with her when she died. I was afraid of all the grief I was going to feel.
And I was afraid of everyone else's pain, too. As frightened as I was, I
wanted to hold her hand and be there for her.
For
others, as for myself, the yearning for just a drop of miraculous balm to
quiet the troubled waters of daily life is universal. Loved ones hope to
heal the bitter quarrels that sunder them from one another. Busy people
maneuver to snatch a moment of calm. Those who are poor long for the peace
of a full stomach and physical security.
To
experience timelessness, you need to focus intently on the moment at hand.
You cannot allow your mind to wander over events of the past or wallow in
deep concern over the future. You must be in the present moment, fully
alert, and clear-headed. In short, you must be totally involved in the
"now".
When
we cheer the spirit of the true athlete, what we applaud is a demonstration
of all of the significance's the word spirit entails for us: courage,
tenacity, commitment, alignment with principle, demonstration of excellence,
honor, respect, and humility.
Every
night and every morning we go through a death of sorts and a rising from the
dead. The state of sleep is very much like dying... one's soul leaves the body
for another place. Whether at night we experience teachings in other realms,
or alternate lives in other times and places...
