InnerSelf Magazine - week of January 16th, 2005

InnerSelf Magazine
week of January 16th,
2005

"If you want to meet someone
who can fix any situation you don't like,
who can bring you happiness
in spite of what other people say or believe,
look in a mirror,
then say this magic word:
Hello."

-- Richard Bach, Messiah's Handbook

NEW ATTITUDES... NEW POSSIBILITIES

Welcome to this week's edition of InnerSelf Magazine (week of January 16th, 2005).

This week we look at the passage from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius. We also take a look at our attitudes at work, at our family patterns, our TV habits, and then at how dream recall can assist us in all areas of our life.

Happy Reading!

With love and best wishes,
Marie T. Russell...

* THIS ISSUE'S ARTICLES *

Age of Pisces to... Age of Aquarius
by Ray Grasse.

The Age of Aries brought an awakening of the outwardly directed ego, but the more feminine Piscean Age brought about a newfound sense of interiority or inwardness. With one foot in the Piscean Age behind us and another in the Aquarian Age before us, we find ourselves caught between radically contrasting, and sometimes conflicting, value systems...

Are We Programmed by TV?
by Margo Adair.

If we are to take seriously the many ways consciousness influences reality then we cannot ignore the impact of the media. When we watch TV, we are in the alpha level. Much to the gratification of the advertisers, it is a highly programmable state of awareness. For too many of us, television has become a companion who is always there, doesn't argue, and is full of entertainment...

Being Happy at Work
by Katherine Gibson.

Meaningful work matters. At its most basic level, work satisfies our economic imperatives and signals our position in society. Through it, we pay the rent, buy groceries, and prepare for the future. But our work can also express who we are and provide reasons for getting on with life. Whether we wait tables at the local diner or manage a Wall Street brokerage house, meaningful work will showcase our special talents and foster deep satisfaction.

Different Roles, Similar Lessons
by Kathryn Andries.

The family unit is a complex mixture of personalities who come together to learn, heal, and love. Even before our soul enters the physical body, we are receptive to the thoughts and feelings of the mother we chose. Family is instrumental in helping us fulfill our soul's purpose by helping us learn karmic lessons and providing an environment in which we can develop our gifts and talents.

Dream Recall
by M.J. Abadie.

Although there is no scientific proof that recalling our dreams makes them any more effective, it does seem that in general when we pay attention to things, we are more effective. Recall that the proverb says, "An unremembered dream is like an unopened letter from God." This doesn't mean that dreams you don't remember are useless, but certainly recalling your dreams and working with them can only be a plus.

DEAR CHILD

Dear Child,

Feel your sadness.  Feel your disappointment.  Feel your pain.

There is no shame in feeling your feelings, both those considered negative and those considered positive.

Know that by feeling all your feelings, you are able to fully participate in your life -- the highs and the lows, the good and the bad.

All is well, Child of God.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

When you have officially grown up...

When you have officially grown up, there will be no more notes to excuse your absence or tardiness. You must show up and you must be on time. There are no exceptions to this rule. When you have officially grown up you will realize that, yes, your parents are actual people with actual feelings.  You cannot go around sulking as you did when you were a teenager.  There will be no more temper tantrums, or shouting matches. You will be held accountable for your behavior whether good or bad. When you have officially grown up a double scoop banana sund' with extra whipped cream on top will still indeed send shivers up your spine, but not from excitement from pure terror.  When you have officially grown up you will still think that boys have cooties, this fact indeed will never change, but as a grown-up you will want to dive in and spread those cooties all over your body.  You will in fact have a deep need to do so.

As an official grown up you will receive hips. These hips will come nicely packaged in previously baggy jeans.  They will go well with your broken in sweatpants but will be cherished by the one you love. They will be tugged upon by that special someone and embraced just as you must learn to embrace and accept them yourself. As an official adult you will have to learn to accept a lot of unwanted things. Grey hair will be in your future as well as the lack of hair or, for that matter, hair that is in all the wrong places. Your eyes and ears and arms and those beloved hips will all start the gradual process of aging. You will wish that a simple lollipop from the doctor would make everything better. You will feel in your joints when it is going to rain, but unlike your childhood need to run and play in the warm shower you will only do so if you are on the beach with a man.  Though, as an official adult, being naked in front of anyone but your reflection will become downright scary. Those perky breasts you once coveted in junior high will now begin the slow journey south and the slender thighs and taut belly will fight with gravity among other things for their glory days.  You will look at going to the gym, not as you did on your way to PE class with bounding excitement, but with anguish and contempt.

You will no longer fight off nap-time, you will appreciate its existence in your everyday life.  As an official grown-up you will be able to talk yourself into those $350 pair of shoes and you will walk in them with your head held high. And when your mother expresses her distaste for your spending habits you will learn it is easier to say nothing. You will realize that even though you view her as an adult woman, to her you will always be a little girl.  In turn, you will realize some fights just really aren't worth the effort.  As an official grown-up you will learn the true meaning of respect and admiration and you will realize there is a distinct difference between the two but used together they make a perfect team. You will see soon enough that becoming an adult will torment you and keep you up at night but it will also lead to some of the most rewarding relationships and amazing memories.

As an official adult you will no longer view men as the other team.  You will not view them as objects and you will realize that they are not all of them bad. There are really, really good ones out there. They come in all sizes and colors and shapes.  You will learn that there is a difference in the love you receive from your family and the love you receive from just one man can be so remarkably different. You will learn of a secret feeling that begins in the pit of your belly and slowly as time goes by wells up your throat, you will learn this is called, life. And once you feel it, you never will want to lose it.  It is the fountain of youth and it will make you young again.  You will learn that to get this feeling it does not have to come from a man but it comes from you. As an official adult you will learn that the love of one man can crush you if you don't build a proper support system.  You will learn that the love of just one man pales in comparison of the love you provide yourself.

As an official adult you will have been hurt, several times maybe, but you will learn to bounce back. You will learn that feeling called life can come in many forms from the smile on a child's face to the cool breath of a companion.  You will learn that getting hurt is part of life and it is what makes you who you are and who you will someday become.  Life is a breath of fresh air, coffee brewing in the morning, dewdrops on grass blades and sparkling stars on a summer night.  You'll know you're an official adult when you feel that feeling in the pit of your stomach, there's no turning back now, life is coming at you full force and you will learn to take it with a smile and a laugh.
