Appreciating Your Partner
by Susan K. Perry, Ph.D.
Do
the best couples have any secret strategies for staying mindful and not
taking one another for granted? One psychologist wrote that we should try to
be as sensitive to small changes in ourselves as we're taught to be with our
cars, and as sensitive to tiny cues from others as a mother is to her baby.
Attaining Samadhi through Zazen
by Katsuki Sekida.
To enter the silence of absolute samadhi is to shake off what we call the
habitual way of consciousness -- in an old phrase, "topsy-turvy delusive
thought." By doing so we purify body and mind. Then, going out (or coming
back) into the world of actual life and of the ordinary activity of
consciousness, we enjoy positive samadhi and freedom of mind in the
complicated situations of the world. This is real emancipation.
I Listened, and Learned
by Janis Amatuzio, MD.
My
mother, my great encourager and supporter, listened patiently as I read her
the last chapter of this book, and she did what every daughter prays for at
such a moment. She cried and then looked at me with an expression of such
admiration and pride. As my mother gave me this gift, she asked a question
that would give me one more. She said, "Janis, it's just beautiful, but tell
me something -- for whom did you write this book and, more importantly, why?"
Learning from Pain & Pleasure
by J. Donald Walters.
The
pain one experiences if one goes against Nature, and the pleasure if one
cooperates with it, is one way all creatures are guided -- not always
infallibly, but in a general sense correctly. A child learns, if it touches
a hot stove, not to repeat the experiment. Sensitivity to extreme heat is
given us for our protection, not for our misery. All living creatures learn,
quickly or slowly according to their intelligence, what "works" for them and
what doesn't.
A Public Proposal
by Alan Cohen.
Energy and happiness have little to do with what is going on around you, and
a lot to do with what is going on inside you. You can find yourself in ideal
conditions and be miserable, and you can be in the most adverse conditions
and soar. Environment and physical factors may influence us, but attitude
makes or breaks us. You may not be able to change your environment, but you
can always change your mind.

DEAR
CHILD
|
|
Dear Child,
Be open to receiving good in your

Know that you receive many blessing
daily. Take the time to recognize and appreciate them -- from the

INSPIRATIONAL
MESSAGE

The Secret of Life...
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist
complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked
how long it took him to catch them.
"Not very long, se?or," answered the Mexican.
"Why then didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the
American.
The Mexican explained that his small catch was adequate to meet his
needs and those of his family.
The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
"I sleep late, se?or, fish a little, play with my children, and take a
siesta with my wife. In the evenings I go into the village to see my
friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs... I
enjoy a full life."
The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can HELP
you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then SELL the
extra fish you catch. With the extra money you can buy a bigger boat.
With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second
one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of fishing
boats. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can
negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your
OWN plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico
City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can
direct your HUGE enterprise!"
"How long would that take, se?or?" asked the Mexican.
"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American.
"And after that, se?or?"
"Afterwards! That's when it gets really interesting," answered the
American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start
selling stocks and make millions!"
"Millions? Really?! And after that, se?or?"
"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the
coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take
siesta with your wife, and spend your evenings drinking and playing your
guitar and enjoying life with your friends."
