"For true happiness, look within yourself.
It's difficult to be happy if you rely on outside resources."

-- Keith D. Harrell

NEW ATTITUDES... NEW POSSIBILITIES

Welcome to the November 14th, 2004 edition of InnerSelf Magazine.

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving and of the Christmas holidays, people's minds turn to family and traditional get-togethers... However, as many have experienced, when we return to the family "womb" many of our "newly developed aspects" seem to fall to the wayside... Perhaps, we need to take a look at what we need to let go of, rather than what we feel we have acquired and need to hang on to...

This week's articles look at the art of true happiness, and at the process of letting go of our accumulated rage and fears, and dealing with relationships openly and honestly and not from a perspective of "you owe me". The authors encourage us to learn the art of simply being happy... no matter the circumstances, no matter whether the current reality matches our "ideal reality".

In this "pre-holiday" season, we can take the time to look ahead, look back, and then take a look at the here and now, and create an inner happiness for ourselves that is undisturbed by outside events or people. Letting go of expectations, of judgments, of accumulated resentments and rage, and starting fresh -- letting go of the "me" with its accumulated history (and ledger sheet of "who done who wrong")...

We can create a peaceful loving experience for ourselves. It's up to us to make the choices that lead us there and keep us there...

With love and best wishes
from our InnerSelf to yours...

Art of True Happiness
by Sharon Salzberg.

Our deepest happiness is born from letting go of what is unnecessary. True happiness may not be at all far away, but it requires a radical change of view as to where to find it. Sometimes we take quite a journey -- physically or mentally or emotionally -- when the very love and happiness we want so much can be found by changing our vision of where to seek it.

Couple's Manifesto of Love
by Susan K. Perry, Ph.D.

The familiar Golden Rule -- Do unto others as you would have them do unto you -- has analogues throughout the world's cultures. But when we succeed in observing such a credo with our dearest loved ones, we're merely offering what we want for ourselves, not what the other person wants. A better version of the Golden Rule for couples is to do unto your partner as your partner would like, not as you would like or as you wish he or she would like.

Fear of Pain
by Ajahn Brahm.

Fear is the major ingredient of pain. It is what makes pain hurt. Take away the fear and only feeling is left. In the mid-1970s, in a poor and remote forest monastery in northeast Thailand, I had a bad toothache. There was no dentist to go to, no telephone, no electricity, and no medicine. Forest monks were expected to endure. In the late evening, as often seems to happen with sickness, the toothache grew steadily worse and worse. I considered myself quite a tough monk but that toothache was testing my strength.

Finally Dissipating the Rage
by Wyatt Webb.

I don't recall being a rage-filled kid. I remember being quite sensitive and frightened, with a general anxiety about living in the world. However, something occurred when I was nine and a half that set up a pattern for future behavior. That day, something clicked in my head and it's been with me ever since. Whenever I felt those "weak" feelings, rage allowed me to shut myself off emotionally, look at the other person, and angrily think, Who needs you? Through the emotion of rage, I could separate from others and become totally unavailable.

How to Be Simply Happy
by Shubhra Krishan.

I know that pure bliss is simple. It is free. Wherever you are, however busy, you can always find a few moments of bliss. I'm so glad I allowed myself to enjoy this fifteen-minute chair massage at the mall -- free of charge and purely on impulse. How is your day going? Or is it going, going, gone -- just like that, in the blink of an eye?

DEAR CHILD

Dear Child,

It is a time of great anxiety with all that is going on in the world.  It is a time that a great amount of fear is being spread.  Fear that causes further anxiety and pain.

Yet within the chaos that is going on, there are many millions of wonderful things happening as well.  Seek out "positive" events.  Spread the word of "positive" news.  Don't be consumed by the "negative" reports but rather help spread all the "positive" events that are happening.

Spread joy, not fear and pain.  Spread love and happiness, not hate.

All is well, Child of God.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

Carpe Diem -- Seize the Day

It's only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth -- and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up -- that we will begin to love each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had.

-- Elisabeth Knbler-Ross
