NEW ATTITUDES... NEW POSSIBILITIES

Welcome to the May 31st, 2004 edition of InnerSelf Magazine.

Life flows with its rhythms... ups and downs, light and dark, joy and sorrow... Each day brings its joy, its beauty, and its challenges. Our choice is always how we deal with the smorgasbord of life...  What we choose to partake in and what we choose to contribute.

Here's a question to ask ourselves daily: What can I do today to make the world a better place? Each person will get a unique answer, one that is perfect for them... One that is theirs for the making...

Here's to a better life for all... and to making the world a better place... It's our world, let's make it shine!

With love and best wishes
from our InnerSelf to yours...

* THIS ISSUE'S ARTICLES *

Allergies Linked to Diet
by Konrad Kail, N.D. and Bobby Lawrence with Burton Goldberg.

According to nutritionist Lindsey Berkson, M.A., D.C., of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the American menu is actually made of various combinations of the same foods, usually wheat, beef, eggs, potatoes, and milk products. For example, she points out, a breakfast of eggs, sausage, white toast, and hash browns is the same as a lunch of a hamburger, white bun, and fries, which is the same as a dinner of steak and potatoes or white pasta.

Animals As Love-Detectors
by Allen & Linda Anderson.

You've heard of watchdogs who let people know when danger is near, but our Labrador retriever, Taylor, lets us know when love is lurking. Linda began to notice that when Allen was away and called home, Taylor often knew about it in advance. About a second before the telephone rang, Taylor would come to wherever Linda was and perk up her doggie ears. Then she'd give a short 'woof' and nod her head toward the telephone...

Becoming More Conscious
by Bud Harris, Ph.D.

Using the word consciousness in any discussion can be confusing because it's a word used to mean so many things. Becoming conscious, in the Jungian sense, requires a committed effort to know ourselves, but this effort rewards us with a sense of energy, assurance, and peace.

Being Married...Staying Together
by Linda & Charlie Bloom.

We were twenty-one when we began our relationship, and quite immature. Each of us was looking for someone to provide us with emotional security, since neither of us had developed any real sense of wholeness within ourselves. We had very distorted pictures of what love is. We weren't equipped to participate in a healthy relationship; neither of us had seen examples of them in our families...

The Six Perfections
by The Dalai Lama.

The first among the six perfections is generosity. Generosity is of three types: giving material aid, giving dharma, and protecting from fear. 'Giving dharma' refers to the giving of teachings to other beings out of the pure motivation to benefit them. Giving away one's own possessions without even the slightest touch of miserliness and without any hope for reward is part of the practice of generosity.

DEAR CHILD

Dear Child,

Breathe deeply.

Breathe in peace...  Breathe out frustration.
Breathe in joy... Breathe out sadness.
Breathe in love...  Breathe out hatred.

Breathe in life, knowing that all is well.

All is well, Child of God.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

A New Set of Ten Commandments

  1. Thou shalt not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.

  2. Thou shalt not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.

  3. Thou shalt not cross bridges before you get to them, for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this.

  4. Thou shalt face each problem as it comes. You can only handle one at a time anyway.

  5. Thou shalt not take problems to bed with you for they make very poor bedfellows.

  6. Thou shalt not borrow other people's problems. They can take better care of them than you can.

  7. Thou shalt not try to relive yesterday for good or ill -- it is gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life today.

  8. Thou shalt count thy blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one.

  9. Thou shalt be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own. It's very hard to learn something new when you're talking.

  10. Thou shalt not become bogged down by frustration, for 90 percent of it is rooted in self-pity and it will only interfere with positive action.
