NEW ATTITUDES... NEW POSSIBILITIES

Welcome to the February 22nd, 2004 edition of InnerSelf Magazine.

Each day is a new day, each week a new beginning...

Let's make it a good one by Cleaning Our Mind, Conversing with Spirit, taking to heart the Declaration of Independence and its rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness... and then learning to listen by creating internal as well as external silence. All of these choices then allows us to move with little steps towards big changes in ourselves and our world.

With love and best wishes from our InnerSelf to yours...

Cleaning the Mind
by Karen Bentley.

The biggest problem with a mistake that's not forgiven is that it becomes a piece of garbage cluttering up your mind. The longer you dwell on the mistake, the more it magnifies and distracts you. Soon, all you think about is this horrible mistake and how much it's impacted your life. Since we rarely, if ever, throw out our mistakes, our minds become a giant toxic dumpsite for all these things that we've done or had done to us. It results in perpetual unhappiness.

Conversing with the Spirits
by Sonia Choquette.

Our house contained my world: my Romanian-born mother and American-born French-Canadian father; my six brothers and sisters; my grandmother and grandfather on my father's side; and a house full of angels, spirit guides, and out-of-body helpers --- some of whom stayed, and some of whom were just passing through from the other side.

Life, Liberty, & Happiness
by Michael Toms.

The Declaration of Independence is a spiritual document meant for all people everywhere, not just for Americans. The United States of America, as I as well as many others perceive it, is out of touch with its original vision. But I also know that out of death, resurrection is possible -- it is my hope and prayer, that this nation be reborn with its "first principles" once again the guiding force.

Silence: External & Internal
by Tobin Blake.

From TV sets and radios to sirens, jet aircraft, horns, and the constant yammer of too many people with too much to say, our world is filled with noise. When we are not engaged in listening to something or someone, we are usually yapping away ourselves, either externally or at least in our own heads. As a result very few people have experienced true quiet...

THIS ISSUE'S COLUMNS:

REFLECTIONS:
From Little to Big
by Marie T. Russell.

Looking at ads and spam directed my way, I wonder what the human preoccupation with bigger this or bigger that is all about... It seems that the human anatomy has certain parts that we think should be bigger, while all the while we trying to reduce the size of other parts... Maybe, the original concept is fine -- we need to focus on expanding certain parts of our being, but the focus has been shifted from the right places...

DEAR CHILD

Dear Child,

Hold on to your dreams.

Hold on to your hopes.

Hold on to the inner knowing that all is in divine order.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

     Love Is..

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?"

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined

 See what you think:

  • "When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." Rebecca - age 8

  • When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth." Billy - age 4

  • "Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." Chrissy - age 6

  • "Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." Terri - age 4

  • "Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen," Bobby - age 7

  • "If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," Nikka - age 6

  • "Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." Tommy - age 6

  • "Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." Mary Ann - age 4

  • "When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." Karen - age 7

  • "You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget," Jessica - age 8

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."
