NEW ATTITUDES... NEW POSSIBILITIES

Welcome to the June 6th, 2004 edition of InnerSelf Magazine.

We are never "done" with changing... As the saying goes, change is the only constant there is. This thought can give us hope -- that we are constantly learning how to be a "better person", a better friend, a better neighbor, a better country, a better world. Things never remain as they are... This is the "light at the end of the tunnel" as we learn to shine our light on ourselves and the world around us.

In this issue we look at becoming an appreciator, practicing compassion, learning from nature, letting go of the past, and empowering our mind to create the life we want. It is after all our life, our mind, our world... we can choose to "make it better"...

With love and best wishes
from our InnerSelf to yours...

* THIS ISSUE'S ARTICLES *

Becoming an Appreciator
by Noelle Nelson & Jeannine Calaba.

Appreciation is most powerful when it ceases to be something that you do only occasionally, and instead becomes your basic approach to life. You must first be willing to overcome those reasons you give yourself for why you shouldn't have to appreciate in a particular situation, or why it won't work, or how appreciation is just too hard in this or that circumstance.

Can We Learn From Nature?
by John Izzo, Ph.D.

Nature is a great teacher. Its natural cycles demonstrate important truths about life and renewal. Every year, deciduous trees must drop their leaves so that new life can form. If the leaves did not fall, the tree could not renew itself. It is that simple. What can this cycle teach us? I believe it teaches us that we pay too little attention to the role letting go plays in the experience of renewal.

Compassion & Tonglin Practice
by Andrew Weiss.

Tonglin practice is rooted in the breath. If you can breathe in and out, you can practice tonglin. The essence of the practice is to breathe in the suffering of another person and to breathe out loving-kindness, compassion, and healing. As we breathe that healing out, we are making the greatest gift we can, the gift of our loving and healing energy, to help relieve another's suffering.

Empowering the Mind
by B. Alan Wallace.

It is possible for the mind to become disempowered. It feels then as if reality is just a given, and all we can do is try to deal with it. The disempowered mind feels it has no choice about what it attends to. Training the attention is definitely one way to begin empowering the mind. It's not as if you are doing something special to the mind to make it big and powerful. You are simply removing impediments, so the inherent power of the mind can spring forth.

Indigos, Self-Love, and Past Trauma
by Doreen Virtue Ph.D.

Indigo Children are often perfectionists, and they can be very hard on themselves. One of the reasons why they become aggressively defensive when you scold them is that they're already painfully aware that they've made a mistake. Help your children understand that everyone makes mistakes. So often, Indigo Children feel shame due to their unique qualities, and because they've been told that they're "disordered".

DEAR CHILD

Dear Child,

Love is why we are here.  To learn to love ourselves.  To learn to love others.  To learn to love the planet.

Do you love yourself?  Do you love the planet?  Do you show all others unconditional love?

Love is the question.  Love is the answer.

All is well, Child of God.

INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

     Hanging On or Letting Go?

Two Zen practitioners, Tanzan and Ekido, were traveling down a muddy road. A heavy rain was falling. Coming around a bend, they met a beautiful young woman in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.

"Come on, you," Tanzan said to the woman, lifting her in his arms and carrying her over the mud.

Ekido didn't speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he could no longer restrain himself. "We monks don't go near women," he said to Tanzan, "especially not young and beautiful ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?"

"I left the young woman there," said Tanzan. "Are you still carrying her?"
