It's In Our Genes

by Raven Cohan

Raven Cohan

The only thing that runs in my family is our feet. This expression is something I tell myself as a light-hearted affirmation. It's helped me for so many years, that I no longer recall whether I read it somewhere, or it just was channeled to me. By saying it to myself, I am less likely to give blame to genealogical tendencies that can produce various symptoms.

An affirmation can help you,
but don't think it's a magic wand.

Most of the time, many of us succumb to the thought that something "in our genes" is going to catch up with us. The next conclusion then, is that nothing can be done to prevent it.

Release The Past

Our judgmental minds love to categorize our various traits. We notice our "good" genes and our "bad" genes. However, we have been given the conscious ability to choose from life's menu. If we think there are certain distasteful dishes on the menu that we have no choice about, we eat them, and begrudgingly choke them down. A handy and easy excuse is to look at our mothers, fathers and/or other family members and say, "Our folks have always had this horrible tasting recipe we've swallowed and that's the curse we must bear."

There is no denying that there are certain tendencies in our genes that are passed generationally on. For example, I'm fortunate to have good teeth. Both my parents had strong teeth, and during my childhood, my mother made me well aware of this fact. Subsequently, when I began experiencing constant runny noses and frequent sneezing, I was told that these symptoms were from my father, who had passed these allergic reactions on to me. Alas, it seemed that carrying my Dad's gene legacy was to be my fate.

In 1981, I woke up one day and told myself I was tired of having so much mucous in my chest and nasal passages. I had long been a practitioner of Science of Mind, and I'd just begun training in Master Mantak Chia's Healing Tao for about three months and was vigorously applying these principles. Well, something must have suddenly clicked somewhere within me as a quantum type of healing happened. There were no lights that went off in my head or anywhere else... however, from that day forward, I no longer experienced the symptoms I'd accepted as part of the last thirty-odd years!

This instant type of healing served as a dramatic example for me. If allergies could be eliminated, so could other physical states I'd witnessed myself carrying from my family. Therefore, I no longer gave myself permission to have temper tantrums just because my parents were explosive people. My mother's tendency to put on pounds easily was no longer my excuse to carry extra weight. I am no longer fearful that my father's heart disease and my mother's cancer are waiting for me in the wings. I am living in such a way, that I am changing the course of the mighty gene river!

Working On You

You, too, can put a conscious daily program into your life that will help you to eliminate your tendencies. An affirmation can help you, but don't think it's a magic wand. A daily, meditative practice must be utilized that will actually begin to change your very cells. This is called Inner Alchemy. Your mind and intention work like scrubbing bubbles. They can clean out imbalances that create physical symptoms that might emerge out of the genes when the immune system is not up to snuff. No longer feeling defenseless against your genes, your mind and emotions benefit, as well as your body.

Find a method of meditation that will help you to specifically strengthen parts of you that have tended toward weakness. The mind needs to be exercised regularly into a more pure awareness of the body. This is the most important housekeeping that you can do.

The affirmation finally becomes your truth, otherwise it's just a bunch of words. Once you begin a disciplined practice, you'll truly be able to say with conviction, The only thing that runs in my family is our feet... and you'll mean it.
