It is refreshing to see that, even in the United States, there are some people who care more about equality and fairness than their own fat pockets. A great example of this is the group, Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength, who has over 100 millionaire members. They are urging the US government to let their tax cut expire, so that they can contribute their fair share to the economy.
If one only listened to TV pundits one might think that all the rich people in the US are "greedy, uncaring, and ruthless". But happily, this is not the case. Many of "the rich folk" have come forward to say "yes, please tax us more". Now while that may be incomprehensible for those of us who are lower on the economic scale, it is indeed a noble act on the part of these people.
T
hey recognize that the great divide that been increasing in size between the super-wealthy and the not-wealthy is not only a threat to their own personal security, but to the existence of the USA (and this is true in other countries as well). One of their members called it "enlightened self-interest". (Read the Huffington Post article.)
This is the first part of the letter they drafted and sent to the president and Congress:
Dear Mr. President, Hon. Harry Reid, and Hon. John Boehner,
We are writing to urge you to put our country ahead of politics.
For the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens, we ask that you increase taxes on incomes over $1,000,000.
We make this request as loyal citizens who now or in the past earned an income of $1,000,000 per year or more.
Our country faces a choice – we can pay our debts and build for the future, or we can shirk our financial responsibilities and cripple our nation’s potential.
You are invited to read the rest of the letter and sign it (whether you are a millionaire of not -- there is a check-box where you indicate which category you belong to).
