Brutal Winter Predicted for U.S?

Winter Octlook 20122011-2012 Forecast: A winter like last year is predicted for the US. La Nina will make it a cold and snowy winter in most parts of the country due to La Niña, which returned in August. It will gradually strengthen and continue through the winter. It is associated with cooler than normal water temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean and influences weather throughout the world.

The AccuWeather.com Long-Range Forecasting Team is predicting another brutally cold and snowy winter for a large part of the country, thanks in large part to La Niña... yet again.

La Niña, a phenomenon that occurs when sea surface temperatures across the equatorial central and eastern Pacific are below normal, is what made last year's winter so awful for the Midwest and Northeast.

NOAA -U.S. dealt another La Niña winter but ‘wild card’ could trump it

For the second winter in a row, La Niña will influence weather patterns across the country, but as usual, it’s not the only climate factor at play. The ‘wild card’ is the lesser-known and less predictable Arctic Oscillation that could produce dramatic short-term swings in temperatures this winter.
